Restoration & Memorials

To promote restoration two Grade 2* listed Embarkation Ramps at Torquay harbour that the USA 4th Infantry Division left for the landings at Utah.

To restore to full sea worthy condition the Lady Cable, the only Dunkiirk Little Ship that left Torquay to take part in the historical evacuation of thousands of allied troops from the killing fields of Dunkirk. To use her as sea transport for part of the proposed history trails. More detail

To erect a fitting memorial for the Home Guard / Land Defence Volunteers (L.D.V.) especially to those who lost their lives.

To find and restore an American amphibian troop carrier known as a DUKW. To be dedicated to the many important successful landings by the allies in this vehicle during the war.

To purchase/lease/rent the Round House / Rotunda (First world war hospital) at Oldway Mansions and with the required permissions, convert this building (with no structural changes.) into the newest 360-degree Wartime cinema. Using the annexed buildings as a Second World War museum.

To include "Pride of the Dart" in the proposed tour transport. This boat was used as the sea borne headquarters by Field Marshal Montgomery and other senior military officers during the landings on D Day 6th June 1944.

To purchase the main estate gates together with the gatehouses and associated structures at the old entrance to the Stover Estate and have them dedicated as a memorial to the men and women of the 4th American Army and the Polish pilots who flew from Exeter protecting this area.

To find and obtain one of the R.A.F. search and rescue motor launches that were stationed in Torquay harbour during the conflict and to restore it to usable condition so that it can be used by the Trust as part of transport for the History Trail.

The Heritage Trail

To incorporate the Brixham Gun Battery Gardens and War Museum together with the gardens and surrounding country walks into the history trail.

To incorporate Slapton Beach and the Sherman tank together with its memorial to the 749 lives lost during the fateful manoeuvres off Slapton prior to the D Day landings; together with the field headquarters of the Allied commander-in-chief, General Eisenhower at Slapton Lee.

To include a visit to Berry Pomeroy Church where the American troops worshiped on a regular basis.

To include the Air Field Memorial at Dunkerswell, where thousands of American airmen left for France never to return. Joe Kennedy was based at this airfield and died during a mission over the war zone.
