Turning Point Heritage Trust Home Memorials

National Home Guard Memorial
The Turning Point Heritage Trust have erected a memorial on Corbyn's Head, Torquay to honour all Home Guards who lost their lives in World War II. The memorial also honours five Home Guard and Royal Artillery men who lost their lives there in 1944. The disaster happened when a shell exploded in the breach block of a First World War Japanese naval gun.

The stone was donated by Plymouth and South West Co-operative Funeral Services.

Unveiling & Dedication
Service and Parade

On the 11th of August 2005 the memorial was unveiled and dedicated. The Parade and Service commenced with a fly past of RAF Hawks from 208 Squadron, RAF Valley. VIP's present included Home Guard Veterans senior members of the armed services, Members of Parliament, the Mayor of Torbay and members of Armed Forces Associations.

Pictures of the event and video clips will be posted here once all material is collected and compiled.

The service was well attended and was reported nationally, including a full page in The Times, a half page in The Express, Television, Radio. Several international television and radio stations also covered the event.

National Dunkirk Little Ships Memorial
The next memorial the Turning Point Heritage Trust will be erecting will be dedicated to all the brave sailors who were killed after leaving these shores to rescue our trapped armed forces from Dunkirk. In parallel with this we are repairing a Dunkirk Little Ship called the Lady Cable. More information about Little Ships can be found here.

Arrangements for the memorial are still in their very early stages and the style and siting of the stone still have to be selected.

National WW II Memorial to Polish
Many Polish people were members of our armed forces and were billeted near Newton Abbot. Their base was within and around Stover Park and the Turning Point Heritage Trust will place a national memorial there dedicated to those that were killed in WW II.

Again, the arrangements for the memorial are still in their very early stages and the style and exact siting of the stone still have to be selected.
